My First Pastor

tlot2540

Pastor Carl Hankins was a true man of God. He was the first pastor in my life. We didn't always go to church when I was growing up, but I will never forget Pastor Carl. He did a children's sermon for us kids before we went off to children's church, he sang and played the guitar, and he actually visited the homes of his congregation! He had the patience of a saint and the heart of Jesus Christ full of compassion and lovingkindness.

When I was around 5 years old, I heard a knock on the door and ran to answer it. When I opened the door, I was shocked to find Pastor Carl on the other side of it, and I slammed the door right in his face! I wish I could remember why, but he found it to be quite funny! My parents weren't quite as amused! I often think back to this memory. That was essentially my response to Jesus all the way until he rescued me from suicide at 30. That's the beautiful thing about the Lord, he, unlike Satan, will never take us by force. Jesus is a choice, surrendering to him was the greatest decision of my life, I choose Jesus again every day.

I am convinced the prayers of this pastor were answered when I chose Jesus. He has passed into glory with our Lord, but I honor him and cherish the memories I have and the remarkable example he set.
